It’s 2016. More specifically it’s nearly the last half of 2016. What have you accomplished so far? Five years from now, when you look back on 2016, what will you remember?
We took our kids on an epic trip to Europe… I am preparing for my first 100 mile bike race… We are going to have our third child later this year. These are a few of the things that will stand out to me when I look back on 2016. I see these as significant personal milestones, but when I consider my professional development and accomplishments thus far in the year… there isn’t anything particularly memorable about what I have done so far this year. There are a few things I am proud of and put on my monthly reports: 40% sales growth in April, 30% on the year, 3 successful sales trips, over 100 new accounts setup… but nothing might be significant enough that I will be likely to remember in 2020. As I consider this lack of exceptional, memorable professional accomplishments, I consider it motivation to do more.
What have you done, or plan to accomplish in 2016 that will change or improve the course of your career? Did you graduate? Did you earn your first $1 million? Did you get a promotion?
Consider this… there are 6 months left in 2016. There are so many things that you can accomplish within 6 months if you dedicate your time and effort to it now! Although there may be some limits on what is practical to complete within the year, there is no limit to the things that you could start! A Master’s Degree is out of reach for 2016 unless you are already almost completed… but starting a degree program within the year would be easy! Making your first million might not be a possibility… but starting your own business within 6 months certainly is! You may find that posting positive earnings for 2016 may even be improbable at this point, but restructuring your organization, or service model, suppliers, etc. can be done!
The important thing is to consider what you CAN do, instead of what you CAN’T. Be brave, be dedicated, be excited!
2016 is your year!
